What is my PageRank?
Page Rank is Google's patented system for weighting the importance of different sites/pages on the internet using a link analysis algorithm. "PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results" - Google's technology overview.
PageRank was developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google's founders, at Stanford University. The project started in 1995 and Google was born in 1998. Page Rank works by inturpertting hyperlinks from one webpage to another as a vote or recommendation. It is the best method (so far), along with the other factors in Googles ranking algorithm, for determining relevancy because it mirrors real life social interaction. We behave similarly online to how we do offline; for example, I may post on a
forum linking to an interesting video - chances are i have also told people about the video offline. So Page Rank is effective because people link to pages when they want to share them or recommend them. One place where Page Rank falls down however is when people link to things to show people something negative. For example, someone may post on a blog to something that outrages them. They did not mean this as a positive recommendation, but Google's algorithm inturprets it this way.
It is important not to put too much emphasis on Page Rank when you are trying to get rankings. Page Rank 1 sites often out rank Page Rank 7 sites. Page Rank is just part of the ranking algorithm and there are many other considerations such as the geographic location of the searcher,
the relevancy of the content on the page, the hyperlink text of sites referencing the page and much more.
Enter in up to 10 URLs - and don't worry about whether or not you put in http:// or www. as the tool will work it out.
